Thankful for Our Little Turkeys

We are so thankful for your little kiddos!  They make us so happy.  They really keep us on our toes, too!  We are also so thankful for our Kindergarten families.  We couldn't do everything that we do at school without your support.  You follow up on things that the kids are learning at school by helping with homework and also by reading our newsletter and reviewing skills at home.  One great example of your support is our Turkeys in Disguise project.  The kids brought in the most darling creations!  You can check out the costumed creatures below.  Enjoy!

Vowels

The kids have worked very hard learning the consonant sounds.  They've been trying to stretch words and hear all the sounds...including the vowels.  Here's a song that we've been using in class - Vowel Bat.  It's a big hit with the kids!

Falling in Love with Reading & Math!

We continue to practice sight words often in Kindergarten.  One fun way that we're practicing is reading the words in context of sentences. Here are some sentences we've been practicing.

We have been working super hard on counting to 100.  If your child uses these songs, it would be fun AND give good practice!

Counting to 100

We've been working SO hard learning to count to 100.  The big obstacle is the "next" group of 10 (i.e. 39 to 40...49 to 50...).  We've used the song "Over the Hump & Jump" to practice those numbers that end with a "9".  We hope this song helps you out!

Reading Sight Words

We're having SUCH fun reading sight words.  We added some extra fun with a seasonal flair!
Check out the PowerPoint below.

"Fall"ing in love with Kindergarten!

We're so happy that temperatures are feeling a little cooler!  It sure makes recess nicer for the kiddos!  Please remember that conferences are next week.  The kids get out 2 hours early.  We can't wait to share how the kids have grown!

Here are a couple fun chants to help your child with Teen Numbers.  We enjoy these chants in the classroom!!

Here are two great songs.  One helps with letter sounds.
The other is great for not only reading sight words but spelling them too!

Sight Word Practice

We're working very hard to practice our sight words.  Kids should to be able to read sight words in isolation without having to sound them out.  At the same time we're working on sight words in isolation, we're trying to find them and read them in books.

You'll hear your child talk about having good fluency - reading like we're talking.  Below are a couple things to practice.  The first one "pops" the sight words in isolation.  The second one shows the words in phrases.  Have fun!

Happy New SCHOOL Year!

We are looking forward to sharing all about Hayes Kindergarten with you at Open House on Tuesday, September 2.
K-2 - 6:00pm - 6:45pm                         3-5 - 7:00pm - 7:45pm

You will start out by going directly to your child's classroom at 6:00pm. There will be a short televised PTSA meeting, followed by information from your child's teacher. All parents will be excused at 6:45pm (and the K-2 teachers will leave to make room for the 3-5 teachers in the parking lot). Parents with students in grades 3-5 can move to those classrooms.

Picture Day is also on Tuesday.  Kiddos should make sure to wear their best smile, since this picture goes in the yearbook!

Thinking About Math

We are looking forward to Curriculum Carnival on Thursday, February 26 - 6:00 - 7:30pm.  It is a free event for our families.  You can look forward to Games...Food...Fun...all inspired by the leadership, dreams & whimsical imagination of Walt Disney!

At our Kindergarten tables during the Curriculum Carnival, we will have math activities.  Here are some different things you can share with your child now!

In class during number talks, we show the kids a series of dots and ask, "What do you see?  How do you see it?  Your child can check out the following clips and practice telling what they see.

In LOVE with Sight Words

We have been working to improve our sight word fluency.  We read words in isolation (just the individual words) and in context (in phrases or in books).  We've used these in our classrooms, and the kids really enjoy them!
